HP Nanda of the Escort group in technical and financial collaboration with Goetzewerks Friedrich Goetze AG, Germany, promoted the Goetze India Limited in 1954 under the name and style Goetze (India) Pvt. Ltd. for making piston rings and cylinder liners. It became a public limited company on 28th March 1961 as a subsidiary of Escorts Ltd. The company ceased to be a subsidiary of Escorts Ltd., on 12th May, 1978.
The company set up its first unit at Patiala and started commercial production in 1957. The company started its second manufacturing unit at Bangalore in 1977.
In the 90s, the company diversified into supermarkets, oilseeds processing and leather garments for exports.

  • Goetze India Ltd (GIL) is a leading player in the piston ring segment. It manufactures a wide range of piston rings for Bi-wheelers, Tractors, Passenger Cars & Jeeps, Commercial Vehicles (HCV’s, MCV’s & LCV’s), Locomotive Engines, Stationary Engines.
  • Goetze (India) has been certified and awarded ISO 9001 & QS-9000 for both Patiala and Bangalore Plants. With technical input from its German partner, GIL has started making high-value rings, which fetch higher margins. GIL also supplies rings to stationary diesel engines and air/gas compressor manufacturers.

Salient Features:

  • Goetze India Ltd also manufactures cylinders and cylinder liners. GIL has diversified into the solvent oil extraction business and trading in leather garments.
  • It commands over half of the market for piston rings and cylinder liners and has a strong presence in the replacement segment, which constitutes two-thirds of the total market for piston rings.
  • Goetze (India) Ltd. is making a wide variety of Light Metal Castings. These include Cylinder Blocks for Escorts Yamaha and Rajdoot motorcycles, Aluminium tube castings and Aluminium crown handles for Yamaha, Rajdoot and Bajaj Kawasaki.
  • Goetze India Ltd. is modernising its production
    processes to keep abreast of new technologies and is considering a JV with a Japanese company to manufacture high-technology rings.

Background
Escorts was originally founded in 1944 by Mr. Hariprasad Nanda at Lahore. It shifted to Delhi after independence in 1947. It started on a small scale as a trading and agency business. The company took franchise for distribution of Massey Ferguson tractors in 1949. Later, it started manufacturing own brand of tractors with technology from Ursus of Poland in 1959. Gradually, Escorts has become one of India’s largest conglomerate.
