We hope that her beautiful journey will be an inspirational read for you all !
Q.1 Tell us about the beautiful journey that you have travelled so far and insight into your business 'Khatte Meethe Desires' ?
From being a timid girl belonging to a conservative family to the founder of a gifting company—the journey has been overwhelmingly fabulous. If asked to leave this and join something else ‘for the better’, I would never do it. I remember sitting on the floor of my room with some material, trying to make the first gift under KMD’s name and I would not trade that memory for anything. KMD has touched so many lives, brought so many smiles! From individuals to companies like Convergys, Trident, Max Bupa, Bharat Group, KPMG, Kohler, we have received an abundance of love. We have done wedding gifts, corporate gifts, personalised gifts and more across India. KMD has been able to make a space for itself in the industry, providing gifting solutions and creating brand recall over three years.
KMD aims at bringing smiles and joy in people’s lives. As vague as it might sound, we actually, really try to do that. In keeping with our name, we try to work on what people really desire to do for their loved ones. The little handcrafted expressions of affection that we create with pride and wrap with affection leave us fulfilled at the end of the day.
Q.2 What motivated & inspired you to start your business?
I have always wanted to do something of my own. Coming from a family of business owners, I feel empowered as a business owner myself. As a creative person, I have always tried to make gifts for my loved ones, always putting thought into what will make them happy. Honestly, I relate to the pure thoughts of a little child who would do something to make mommy happy. That pure essence of unconditional love is what we try to tap into with our gifts. Moreover, I believe my background in psychology helps me connect with my buyers and understand their requirements, as to what they really want to gift.
Q.3 According to you, what are the key aspects that can help an Indian woman to achieve professional and business success?
Over the past three years, I have learned that self-confidence is key. Sylvia Plath said, “self-doubt is the enemy of creativity,” which is what I believe as well. Self-doubt hinders growth and learning.
As women in business, we need to be able to take risks and strive to learn from them. Patience and zeal are of significant value. No one can find a rich donkey, it is smart work that paves the way.
Q.4 What is the greatest obstacle you had faced in achieving the success you desired? How did you overcome it?
I am still on the same road, same journey. I don’t have an end goal or a destination I want to reach, which after achieving I would say that I am successful. It has been a bumpy and beautiful road trip. Sometimes I was homesick, sometimes I felt like a traveller fulfilling her destiny. On the way, I sometimes found my pockets empty and sometimes found no one around to ask for directions. KMD is a bootstrapped venture with a sole owner. My biggest obstacles have been these two: often not having enough finances to move forward, and no one around to guide me. But that’s the beauty of life, it teaches you things you didn’t even know there were to learn.
Q.5 Do you manage your finances on your own and do you have knowledge of all your investments?
Yes, I manage all my finances on my own and keep track of each and every penny I invest directly or indirectly.
Q.6 Should women have financial knowledge and how much important it is for a woman to be financially independent?
It is no question, rather a mantra. Life has become so unpredictable these days that financial independence is a must. I would say that even for women who are not working, staying on top of finances should be a priority. Knowing about saving options, expenditure and investment gives one better clarity on where they stand. I can tell you from experience that one only needs to do it a few times to understand these concepts and subsequently widen their perspective.
Q.7 What advice would you give to the young women entrepreneurs about being more organized and informed about start-ups?
It is simple: find your area of interest and read about it. There are so many apps which can help you do that, newspaper or something as simple as subscribing to magazines that focus on startups. But there is so much information floating around that it is almost practically impossible to keep track of it all. So, it is only wise to focus on things which interest you and pertain to your industry. It is not difficult. Just set aside one hour on a Sunday morning and read. In case that doesn’t work for you, then you can simply read while travelling. There are so many new social networks and forums one can join to gain insight as well.
Q.8 The young entrepreneurs will love to know your SUCCESS MANTRA, so that they can also use it for their business growth.
Do your own thing. Be your own mentor.
An awful lot of times I have come across opportunities which seemed so much better than what I was doing. I met many influential people who saw things in me which even I couldn’t see. I even tried taking those paths but always felt out of place, even if I was doing well. I feel that my journey has been more about discovering myself because it stemmed from passion. What I recommend the best is to focus on your own dream, no matter how tiring, tedious or messy it is at the moment. Give yourself a break and don’t beat yourself up for not instantly getting what you wanted, as it is simply preparing you for more wonderful things that you would not have actually imagined. Pay attention to your gut feeling. It is there for a reason and belongs to you.
